SCARLET
IXORA
Subbulakshmi Annamalai’s approach to art is deeply rooted in her observation of colour, light, and the quiet beauty of nature. One of her notable works, the 4 × 2 ft acrylic artwork “Scarlet Ixora,” draws inspiration from the ixora flower — fondly known as Idli Poo in Chettinad. A beloved flower from her homeland, ixora grows abundantly in vibrant clusters of many colours across village gardens. Captivated by its radiant blooms, she interprets the flower through a unique abstract composition of deep crimson blossoms. Using piping techniques to sculpt the flowers and palette knives to texture the leaves, she transforms the canvas into a richly layered surface — a process she finds both meditative and deeply therapeutic.
Scarlet Ixora is a celebration of intensity of color, texture, and emotion. This piece bursts with the fiery spirit of the ixora bloom, its clustered petals rendered in deep, scarlet reds that feel almost aflame.
Each textured petal rises from the canvas like a spark from embers, layered with purpose and power. The ixora often seen as a symbol of passion, vitality, and resilience takes center stage here, not as a gentle flower, but as a bold force of nature.
The scarlet hue commands attention, echoing themes of inner fire, sacred rage, and blooming strength . There’s something both wild and elegant in these clustered blossoms—like a flame that’s learned to dance.
This isn’t just a floral painting—it’s a visual incantation, a garden of fierce beauty forged in pigment and texture. “Scarlet Ixora” invites the viewer to feel not just the warmth of color, but the burning spirit behind it.
